This refers to a block of Latin text that layout designers traditionally use as a placeholder. So instead of random text, you might want to use something that is known as lorem ipsum. If somebody is looking at this document, they might even think that this text is what's supposed to be in the document. Now next, it might just be distracting that this placeholder is in English.
So now I have some placeholder text taking up just the right amount of space on this document. That's the significance of those numbers I put in the parentheses. So that gives me five paragraphs, each with two sentences. Make sure you put your cursor at the end of that line and hit Return. So lets undo what I just did there, backing up a little bit, and I still have the r-a-n-d and the parentheses, but inside of the parentheses I want to put in five comma two. But that's what those parentheses are for. Pretty useful, but at first it looks like you don't have control over how much text it drops in. I'm going to type in a specific string of text, equals r-a-n-d, open parenthesis, close parenthesis, and then I'll hit Return, and that just drops in some placeholder text. I just need some placeholder text to fill that space for now, so I've got a few options. I don't know what I'm going to write for that intro yet. I have the ingredients and the recipe steps, but I want to have an introduction paragraph in the beginning.
In cases like that, you can have Word plug in some placeholder text temporarily until you're ready to replace it with your final text. Sometimes you're writing a document and you want to start by designing the layout, but you don't have the final text that you want for the document.
